Carla A. Parra founder & CEO
Of Give me Peace.org has been inspired and driven partly due to her families legacy of community service .
Her grandfather Ramon N Parra was a key figure in developing programs and implementing them in the border community known as San Ysidro , in San Diego county , California.
His work in the community garnered him the title as the unofficial mayor . His involvement garnered him the honor of greeting and hosting the then senator Robert F Kennedy when he was campaigning for the 1968 presidential campaign.
Ramon N. Parra’s work in the community often earned him the unofficial title of Mayor of San Ysidro.
The 47-year resident of San Ysidro served on the school board for 18 years, founded a Little League team, volunteered for countless organizations and served as a delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
On June 3, 1968, when Robert Kennedy visited San Ysidro, Parra was chosen to greet and host the presidential candidate.
“He was just the kind of person that wanted to be involved in the community,” said Oscar Parra, youngest son of the elder Parra, who died May 9, 1988, at the age of 73.
It’s because of Ramon’s dedication to various San Ysidro organizations and his contributions to the community that a group of former San Ysidro residents are pushing to honor his legacy.
The Friends of San Ysidro group, working in collaboration with the San Ysidro School District, plan to preserve Ramon’s legacy by naming a school library in his honor.
